So - what do we think of the new prom?

Now the new prom's been open a while I wondered how others feel about it from a cyclist's point of view?

On the positive side, I think it's a vast improvement on the noisy, intimidating dual carriageway but as a cyclist I don't find it that great -

1. I have a personal dislike for stone sett road surfaces - the one along here isn't as bad as some but still a bit of a rough ride. Better than potholes.

2. The vague road / pavement boundary makes it really hard to 'take the lane'. I did try riding along the grey section that marks the edge but found I was given virtually no clearance by overtaking vehicles.

3. It's a 20 limit so why is it that when I'm heading south with a tailwind, and it's slightly downhill, I still get overtaken? Same happens in Layton of course.

4. The 'road' isn't a consistent width - at one junction (Church Street?) the edge marking moves over so that from riding in 'secondary' I'm suddenly riding on the edge.

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer this to the old road, but the techniques I use to 'manage' motor traffic don't work here!
Most drivers do respect the 20 limit and the general intent of the design, but there's always one who simply has to be in front.
I haven't had the opportunity to use it when there are lots of pedestrians around, it'll be interesting to see if the shared space concept works.

Overall - it's far far better than the old road, and infinitely better than trying to ride the contraflow 'path' up Adelaide Street and negotiate the town centre. I won't miss General Street either.

While in this area, I see the route the seaward side of the Metropole is open again, but they've plonked a couple of the Victorian shelters right in the middle. Not a problem with care but sooner or later somebody will come flying down the hill and come a cropper!

As you may know British Cycling are organising some racing to take place on the 14th April 2012 at Palatine Circuit. Included in the list of events is a women's ‘Go Race’ event.

I would like to offer the ladies the opportunity for some women only coaching at Palatine circuit in the 6 weeks prior to the event. As the Go Race event is aimed at people new to racing, I thought this was a perfect opportunity to teach the ladies racing skills.

The coaching will be free of charge, but as the cost of the circuit will be £7.50 per hour I propose the cost is divided between the ladies who take part. This opportunity will be open to any lady interested in racing on the 14th April .

I aim to start coaching at the beginning of March. I have not yet booked the sessions but I am open to catering for the majority availability, so evening or weekends.

If any ladies are interested please could you forward me a list of names, racing experience, if any and availability.

Thank you and kind regards

Carley Brierley
British Cycling Road and Time Trial Coach.

After some hard training this morning couple of us went to watch the CDNW Youth League racing on the circuit, caught the last 10 laps, racing was great, good turnout of riders, fast racing even from the youth, mind the lad that won it was about 6ft 3" !
Circuit is great the two adjoining straights are great for watching and for racing as riders can see each other across should there be a split, nice and wide too.
Few issues, don't think it would be pleasant to crash into the wooden fence along the side, unlikely on the straights but you never know, touch of wheels, so perhaps some hay bails or soft padding attached perhaps ?
Is there still going to be a seperate building built for changing and such ?
Couldn't tell if you can access both ends to see the races around the corners at each end ?
Heard will be £15 to hire for one hour, assume this is just for the track no matter how many riders, okay ish, would need minimum of five riders to split that cost otherwise too expensive, me and my club mate both agreed we would use it for training now and again and am sure our club will.
Complete lack of publicity as usual, were the press there today as that would have been a great story for youth and sport in the town. If there is to be regular racing on then we need the EG to be reporting this as the back pages are far too full of football with big pictures !
Again, I ask will there be a website, the public needs to see what is on to either use or go and support/watch events and also for us locals and clubs to see if it is available for booking, simple site with a calendar on it ?
So came away quite impressed.
